D64 – Land’s End…
Distance Travelled: 19.42km. Total Distance: 1,537.25 km Weather: Typically overcast and rainy. Accomodation: none!
Final leg, and we set off, sans packs, at just after 7am.
Our planned route, more or less directly via roads, we decided to scrap after talking to a few fellow end-to-enders, preferring to take as many paths and rights of way that we could. Theoretically this should have made it a pleasant final walk but, sadly, Cornwall conspired against us, with a series of barbed wire blockages and one right of way totally blocked off with a cunningly planted hedge and electric fence messing us around…of course, this required a turnaround of several km. Oh well, I’m sure in time we’ll laugh about it and not wallow in semi-psychotic rage…not today though.
We carried on West to Sennen Cove and took the coastal path south to the end…quite emotional seeing the First and Last Inn appear over the rise.
We gathered ourselves and crossed the line, just in time for it to chuck it down. No bands were waiting, no fanfare; don’t they know what we’ve achieved… anyway, we headed over to get our piccy at the sign, then hunted around for someone to give us our final stamp.
Catching the bus back to Penzance we picked up our car and that was it.
We’ve seen things across the length of the land that we’ll always carry with us, met great people, partaken in various ciders and, most importantly, had a fantastic time and raised funds for some really worthy organisations.
Thank you to all who have made our odyssey so great, to those that have donated, or simply offered a supportive message… your support has meant the world to us.
